The next stage of enterprise AI will not be built around one model serving every use case. Vertical and domain-specific platforms are growing fastest in regulated industries. Healthcare, legal, finance, and security each have dedicated AI tooling built on top of foundation models but tuned for domain-specific compliance, accuracy, and workflow requirements.

Governance at the AI level means defining who approves a model for production, who monitors its outputs, how errors are escalated, what data the system can access and under what conditions, and how the system is retired or updated. It also means documenting model decisions in ways that satisfy regulatory and audit requirements. In practice, organizations with named accountability for AI systems outperform those with distributed or unclear ownership.
The most productive framing is redesign rather than replacement. The question is not which jobs disappear but which tasks are reallocated — to AI, to human-AI collaboration, or to humans alone. Organizations that have explicitly redesigned roles, updated performance metrics for hybrid workflows, and invested in upskilling show higher AI ROI than those that gave employees tool access without changing how work is structured.
